What is an isolator switch?

An isolator switch is a dedicated on-off device installed near the outdoor unit of an air conditioning system that physically cuts all electrical power for safe servicing and maintenance.

An isolator switch is a safety-critical device that sits near the outdoor condenser unit of an air conditioning installation. It provides a visible, manual way to completely disconnect electrical power to the system before any work is performed on the unit.

Australian building codes and electrical standards require isolator switches on air conditioning systems. The switch must be readily accessible, clearly labelled, and positioned within sight of the outdoor unit. This means technicians can see the switch and confirm power is off before opening panels or handling electrical components.

The isolator switch serves two main functions. First, it protects service staff and contractors from electrical hazard while they work on refrigerant lines, compressors, and electrical connections. Second, it ensures compliance with the National Electrical Code of Australia (AS/NZS 3000). Many local councils in the Perth metropolitan area require proof of proper isolator installation before granting final approval on new air conditioning work.

Technicians testing or replacing compressors, cleaning coils, or diagnosing electrical faults will use the isolator switch as their primary isolation point. A faulty or missing isolator switch is a common reason work fails inspection.
