What is a gas top-up (regas)?
A gas top-up (regas) is the process of replenishing refrigerant in an air conditioning system, typically done after a leak is detected or repaired, or when the charge has dropped below optimal levels.
Regassing refers to adding refrigerant gas back into an air conditioning system to restore cooling performance. When an AC unit loses refrigerant through a leak or gradual system depletion, the compressor cannot absorb and release heat effectively, resulting in reduced cooling capacity or no cooling at all.
A regas job differs from routine maintenance. It is a targeted repair that happens in response to a specific fault rather than as part of regular servicing. Most Perth contractors will diagnose low refrigerant levels using pressure gauges and thermal readings, then identify and repair the source of any leak before adding fresh refrigerant to specification.
Common causes of refrigerant loss include small pinhole leaks in copper tubing, failed seals on the compressor, or loose connections at joints. Modern air conditioning systems use sealed circuits designed to retain refrigerant for many years if intact. Once a leak is traced and sealed, the system is vacuumed to remove moisture and air, then recharged to the manufacturer's pressure and capacity rating.
Regassing is not a substitute for fixing underlying leaks. Adding gas to a system with an unrepaired leak simply delays the problem. For this reason, reputable repair contractors will always locate and repair the cause before regassing.
