What is capacity (kW) sizing?

Capacity (kW) sizing is the process of matching an air conditioner's kilowatt output rating to the thermal cooling or heating demand of a given space.

Kilowatt (kW) capacity refers to the rate at which an air conditioning unit can remove heat (cooling) or add heat (heating) to a space, measured in kilowatts. This figure differs entirely from the unit's electrical power draw, which is how much electricity the system consumes from the grid to operate. A 7 kW split system, for example, removes 7 kilowatts of thermal energy per hour, but may draw only 2-3 kW of electrical power to do so.

Proper sizing matches this capacity to a room's thermal load.
